Organic compounds can be classed into families. Each family is characterized by a specific group of atoms.

Carboxylic acids ethanoic acid
is the main component of vinegar
pentanoic acid
is extracted from the flowering plant called vallerian
methanoic acid
also called formic acid  (extracted from ants)
Alcohols ethanol
is the alcohol found in alcoholic beverages
methanol
is toxic and  is used  in denaturated alcohol
propan-2-ol
is used in industry
Ketones
propanon
ialso called acetone is used as a solvant (as nail polish remover  for example)
isophorone
is  used as a solvent (in some printing inks for example)
cyclohexanone
is  used as a precursor to nylon

Aldehydes cinnamaldehyde
is the compound that gives cinnamon its flavor and odor
glutaraldehyde
is used to disinfect medical and dental equipment
methanal
aslo called formaldehyde, is for example used toi product facial tissue or roll towels.


On 10 June 2011, the US National Toxicology Program described formaldehyde as "known to be a human carcinogen"
Esters ethyl propionate
is contained in kiwis and strawberries
isoamyl acetate
has an odor similar to banana
ethyl methanoate
has the characteristic smell of rum
Amines methylamine
has a strong odor similar to fish
aniline
is used for herbicides or pigmenht (as a precursor to indigo or to the blue of blue jeans)
p-phenylenediamine
is an ingredient on hair dyes
